MPR Interview With Silver Tongue Devil (by Joshua Kruszyna)

SilverTongueDevil, a no-frills metal band from Dallas, Texas, have been a staple in their scene since 2005. With lyrics inspired by gothic literature and instrumentation that is merges raw, underground metal with hardcore punk, they have a sound that is definitely unique among their contemporaries. With three albums, multiple tours all over the Southwest, and numerous appearances on well-known radio stations and podcasts under their belts, I figured I would reach out to these local legends to see just what they were made of.

Q. Craig, it’s a pleasure speaking with you guys!

A. Many thanks for interviewing us! We greatly appreciate the support.

Q. Now, you all have been a band for 14 years – that’s quite a feat! How did you guys form SilverTongueDevil?

A. The band was started by myself (vocals) and Aleks Speed (guitar) back in the spring of 2005. We met through an ad in the back of a local weekly music trader called The Harder Beat, and quickly put together a full lineup and started playing live by that fall. We shared a love of old school heavy and more modern underground bands, and wanted to write songs that reflected both. As we gained momentum by playing shows across the region and recording album,s we lost and gained some members, finally settling on John Tapia as bassist and second guitarist, and David Cruz on drums. We’ve worked steadily to improve our craft and refine our live show over the years, never breaking stride despite our occasional setbacks.

Q. You guys have an incredibly unique sound, blending underground metal with hardcore punk around lyrics that reference gothic literature. How did you guys find your sound?

A. Our sound came together by happy accident. We all have different influences and bring those to the table, and when we write we do so as a group. This allows us to write songs that are influenced by old school heavy metal, death, and thrash, without necessarily falling squarely into those sub-genres. We’re big fans of very aggressive music but also dynamics, and push ourselves to think outside of the box when it comes to composition.

Q. With that in mind, what are some of your primary musical influences?

A. Our influences are all over the place, but in terms of what inspires the band we owe a large debt to Black Sabbath, Slayer, Immortal, Hypocrisy, and Iced Earth, as well and punks like The Misfits and Dead Kennedys.

Q. Those are all fantastic influences for any metal band! Craig, do you have a favorite songs that you guys have written? If so, which one is it, and why?

A. It’s too hard to pick one song as favorite, I like different songs for different reasons. I can say that over the years there’s a core group of songs that we play regularly that are reliably fan favorites, and we love playing them. They are THE CONQUERING THRONE, X, CHOPPED UP BY A WITCH, SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DEVIL, and YOUR MOTHER SUCKS COCKS IN HELL.

Q. Nice! I have to say that those are some of the best song titles I’ve ever read. Now I saw in your press-kit that you guys are kicking off something called Acoustic Devil. Could you tell me more about that?

A. Acoustic Devil is our acoustic metal side project. It’s the same band minus the drummer, and we play our songs the way we normally do except on acoustic instruments. Most acoustic projects tone down their songs and we wanted to do the opposite, doing everything as aggressively as we can. This quickly caught on among our fans and also made us new ones, and we’ve started playing live and recording as Acoustic Devil, as well as SilverTongueDevil.

Q. Lastly, as such a long-lasting metal band, do you guys have any tips for the other bands out there?

A. No, there’s no advice to give. People either give up or find their own way.
