I’m not sure of the economic climate in Finland or what the weather is like, but the country certainly has a propensity for being a raw metal manufacturer like no other. And the modern death metal band Eartheria is no exception to this. Formed in early 2014 out of Pori, Finland, Eatheria is a powerhouse of dark and complex riffs. Today we’ll be taking a look at their second release: Awaken the Sun.
The first band that came to my mind during my first listen was Rivers of Nihil. After taking a glance at their biography, I learned that Rivers of Nihil were one of their influences, along with Gojira, Mastodon, and Sylosis. The tracks are incredible arrangements – dark and heavy, all while conjuring a mystical and magical feel. I was so impressed by how they go from sounding like a melodic symphony on Myriad to a complete pounding and raw crunch on Nihil. The vocalist has incredible range, sounding like cookie monster one moment to sounding soft and clean the next . It adds such an element of classy death metal, if you will.
The band’s sound is very distinct, definitely carving out their own style. Why the hell aren’t they more well known here in the states? Why aren’t they signed? They are probably the most impressive underground metal band I have ever heard – the antipathy of what modern metal is.
Overall musicianship – 9.5 out of 10 (excellent throughout)
Vocal style – 9 out of 10 (great vocals – on key and melodic whether they’re clean or unclean)
Overall song composition – 10 out of 10 (tight, driving, and energetic throughout)
Originality – 9.5 out of 10 (truly a unique sound in a sea of immitators)
